Flags Waving Themselves

And so like some vulgar flags waving themselves, masses of smug corporate drones pay five dollars to wear jeans and pink shirts on a Thursday in support of a cancer cause they think little about for the rest of the year. It's a warm, glowing, feel-good-about-yourself and fall-in-line ticket they buy without question. I applaud anyone whose guilt could be assuaged for a mere five dollars! Wow, that's impressive! I wonder how many hours of volunteer work these same people put in each month? Uh, let me guess, zero?

See, my problem is not without validity. It's important to select your own special causes, do volunteer work and raise funds to help eradicate whatever the hell you think needs eradicating - homelessness, AIDS, animal cruelty, halitosis etc. but I think it should be done without coercion or guilting. I've come to this conclusion after my own experiences raising funds for MS. The ends does not justify the means if you are insincere or end up alienating a public segment that otherwise would be open to being educated and supportive of the cause. So there.
